the Logan School visits GEMS

A few weeks ago, as a follow-up to our presentation at the Logan School in Denver and a visit to the Sand Wash Basin with them, the group of 6th-8th graders all came to the ranch to learn about what we’re doing to support the horses and burros off the range. It was a very fun day and they left deciding that they would sponsor Ito, our GEMS Ambassador burro for a year! What a generous gift, one that will help us bring him out to other schools for education and learning opportunities.

We hiked out into the burro pasture with trash bags to do a clean-up sweep and once the burros found us, they wanted us to stay, they’ve never had that many people interacting with them all at once & they loved it! Confused when we decided to hike back to the ranch, they made sure to escort us all the way. Then off to the back of the pick-up’s for a drive out onto our large pasture for a study in herd dynamics and behavior…they were hiding from us, but when we finally found them, they put on quite the display, showcasing themselves for all the kids. Meeting the horses in training and getting a demo on how we do things rounded out the day for them.

It was an exciting day for us, being able to show the kids how wonderful these animals are and how much they are worth protecting and saving!Great Escape WH Sanctuary 10 23 2013 202-2-2
